Lighting is not just an element of interior design – it is one of the most important factors affecting the comfort of everyday life. Light affects our perception of space, influences how we perceive colours, shapes and proportions of the interior, and has a significant impact on our well-being, concentration and even our circadian rhythm. So how do you design lighting that is not only aesthetic but, above all, user-friendly?
We sought the answer to this question in a conversation with Katarzyna Przybyła – an expert at Nowodvorski Lighting, who helps customers design lighting in spaces with people in mind on a daily basis.

Lighting and perception of space

The way we light an interior has a huge impact on how it is perceived visually. A properly selected angle of light can bring out details, emphasise textures and influence the proportions of a room, making it appear larger or smaller.
For general lighting, fixtures with a wide light distribution angle are ideal, as they evenly illuminate the entire interior, creating a calm and friendly atmosphere. An example of this are the spherical SNOWBALL pendant lamps.
It is also worth paying attention to the colour rendering index (CRI). In places where colour accuracy is important, such as restaurants or galleries, luminaires with an RA above 90 are recommended, as they reproduce colours in the most natural way. Excellent solutions in this case are CTLS MILO LED, CTLS NEA LED and lamps from the LVM and UT-LVM systems.

Circadian rhythm and light colour

Lighting plays a key role in regulating the circadian rhythm and biological processes in our bodies. In the morning and during the day, it is worth surrounding yourself with bright, cool light with a colour temperature above 4000K, which stimulates activity, supports concentration and boosts energy. In the evening, on the other hand, warm and subdued light in the range of 2700K to 3000K is definitely better, as it prepares the body for rest and promotes calmness.
An increasingly popular strategy is layered lighting, which combines different types of light. The choice of specific models depends on the nature of the interior and the desired effect. For example, a lamp from the AMARELA collection can serve as general lighting, while EASY LED is perfect as mood lighting by the bed, combining a pleasant atmosphere with functional reading light. The POISE model, on the other hand, is perfect as a floor lamp, and the ORTO chandelier can be an impressive focal point, e.g. above the dining room table.
It is also worth considering the use of perimeter systems, such as CTLS or CAMELEON, which allow for flexible lighting design tailored to the time of day, the function of the room and the individual needs of the user.

Safety and visual comfort

Aesthetics and functionality are one thing, but issues related to visual comfort and health are equally important. One of the most common problems is glare, i.e. excessively intense light falling directly on the eyes. To prevent this, it is worth choosing luminaires with a shielded light source, such as SATELLITE, and using anti-glare filters, e.g. HONEY COMB, which diffuse light and eliminate unpleasant reflections. Lamps with a recessed light source, such as MONO or FOURTY, are also a great solution, as they increase visual comfort, especially when spending long periods of time in one room.
Another important aspect is light flickering, which is often invisible to the naked eye but can lead to fatigue, headaches and loss of concentration. That is why it is worth choosing products that have been tested for lighting quality. Products tested in the Nowodvorski Lighting photometric laboratory, such as CIRCOLO LED, are equipped with high-quality power supplies and meet strict standards for lighting stability, blue light emission and UV radiation.

Light created with people in mind

Designing user-friendly lighting is a process that combines aesthetics, functionality and concern for health and well-being. The key is the right choice of fixtures, their placement, and the adjustment of light colour and intensity to the rhythm of residents' lives.
