The Fourty Round lamp, winner of the Red Dot Award – a glimpse behind the scenes
Martyna Zawierucha
Good design does not happen by chance. Behind every refined product lies a process full of testing, technological decisions and the consistent development of a single idea. This is precisely how the Fourty Round lamp came into being – a product that won the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2026, one of the most prestigious accolades in the world of design. The international jury recognised the combination of striking form, functionality and quality of craftsmanship. The Fourty Round demonstrates that modern decorative lighting can both create an interior atmosphere and meet users’ everyday needs. However, this is not just a story about an award. Above all, it is a story about the design process, technology and a thoughtful approach to light.
What is the Red Dot Award?
The Red Dot Award has long been recognised as one of the most prestigious accolades in the world of design. Every year, thousands of products across various categories are assessed – from consumer electronics and furniture to lighting and interior design. In the 2026 edition, Nowodvorski’s Fourty Round pendant lamp collection was also among the winners.
The competition jury considers not only the product’s appearance, but also its functionality, build quality and the way it meets the needs of modern users.
In the case of lighting, this is particularly significant. After all, light is not merely an element of interior design. It accompanies daily rituals, influences our well-being, creates atmosphere and defines how we perceive a space.
Inspiration and the design process
Fourty Round was created under the guidance of Łukasz Jaworski – a designer and engineer at Nowodvorski Lighting – who worked on the collection for a year alongside the Nowodvorski Design Lab team and technical specialists.
The inspiration came from the organic forms characteristic of 1960s and 1970s design – soft lines, proportions and a departure from the classic, linear approach to lighting. Equally important was the experience of light within the interior. Every detail was tailored to this concept – from the even distribution of light sources to the distinctive arched cut-out in the tubes covering the bulbs. It is a subtle element that brings order to the design’s lines and highlights its refinement.
From the outset, consideration was also given to the repeatability of production – so as to maintain high build quality whilst ensuring the precision of all components.
Fourty Round – more than just a pendant light
Fourty Round is part of the extensive, modular Fourty collection.
The entire series is based on slender tubes with a diameter of 4 cm and a consistent, minimalist aesthetic. It encompasses a wide range of products – from wall lights and spotlights to linear models, ceiling lights and pendant lights. This makes it possible to design cohesive lighting schemes for the entire space.
The distinctive rounded silhouette of the Fourty Round luminaire has been designed to appear light and airy, regardless of where it is installed. Its form conceals a sophisticated lighting function. The luminaire is also fitted with the One Click system, allowing for convenient bulb replacement.
Lighting effect – two lighting scenarios
The most important feature of the Fourty Round is the way it works with light.
The model combines two lighting functions in a single lamp. The lower downlight fixtures provide even illumination of a table or a selected area, whilst the upper uplight LED modules emit soft, diffused light upwards, creating a more atmospheric ambience within the interior.
Both circuits can operate together or independently, allowing the lighting to be easily adapted to the situation and the user’s needs. Additionally, the upper LEDs can be fitted with a dimming function, enhancing user comfort.
Particular attention has been paid to the quality of light diffusion. The light sources are evenly spaced, resulting in a natural and soft effect. The six LED sources responsible for the uplight are concealed within the profile and shielded by a diffuser, creating a subtle lighting effect.
As a result, Fourty Round transforms the character of a space in tune with the rhythm of the day – from functional lighting to a soft, relaxing atmosphere in the evening.
Polish manufacturing, technology and craftsmanship
Behind Fourty Round lies a complex technological process and high precision in manufacture.
One of the greatest challenges was developing a technology for bending the aluminium profile in such a way as to maintain perfect proportions and consistency across every component. This required the creation of bespoke structural solutions and the implementation of specialised production processes.
Refining the paint finishing technology was also a key element of the process. The use of high-quality paint coatings ensures an aesthetic finish, high resistance to damage and even surface coverage without chipping or visible imperfections. As a result, the lamp retains its refined appearance for years of use.
The entire process – from design to manufacture – was carried out in Poland. Design engineers and production technology specialists worked on the project’s implementation, jointly translating an ambitious design vision into a product ready for mass production.
Light that helps you live more beautifully
Fourty Round is a story of conscious lighting design – one that goes beyond mere function and becomes part of everyday interior experiences. It is a project that demonstrates how lighting can enhance well-being and create unique interiors.
The award for Fourty Round is therefore more than just a design success. It is a confirmation of an approach in which design does not exist for form’s sake alone. It is also a sign that Polish manufacturing is making its presence felt ever more clearly on the international design scene.
